The tutorial they are testing is this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5t7r2bA3clw&t=103s

If you'd like to have a go yourself, grab some charcoal and head to this page for the reference photos we used:

We want our videos to be as real as possible. It can be frustrating to see drawing experts demonstrating with ease in tutorials, because it's much harder to do the techniques without all that muscle memory and experience they have.

We are doing another experiment with beginners doing one of our drawing techniques - this time with subscribers to our newsletter (sign up with the link above if you haven't already, it's awesome).

Drawing hair is really important, but often overlooked. Frank Gambino showed us a really practical and powerful method in that tutorial. This method produces results quite rapidly, so I thought it would be perfect for a before-after experiment like this. Keep in mind though that not all techniques are so quick to learn.

We have more tutorials on hair coming up. This is a sort of introduction - using a pliable material like willow charcoal and drawing fairly straight and dark hair (the easiest type of hair to draw). In future, we'll do more complex scenarios.

The testers have got different levels of experience and all had their own approaches, struggles and triumphs.

Thanks so much to all of them
