We’ll start with the pen tool. Make sure fill is turned off and turn the stroke on.
From the center of your composition click and add point. Zoom out and hold shift on your keyboard to draw a straight line outside of your comp.
Now we can open the shape layer and go to the stroke. Open the Taper dropdown and set the Start Length to 100%
Then add a repeater. Go into the Transform repeater settings and set the X position to 0.
Then increase the rotation to about 30 degrees.
From here increase the number of copies until you have a circular array of lines like this.
Then just hit R to bring up rotation. Alt-click the stopwatch and type time*20 to animate the lines.
If you want create yourself a background and set the shape layer to overlay to blend it nicely.
That’s how you can create a cool spiral background with After Effects.
