James Gurney introduces his new video tutorial about the oil painting techniques he uses to create three dinosaur images. This time the focus is less on the Tyrannosaurus and more on the technique.
He starts with sketches in watercolor and gouache, and then explains his tools and materials. As he develops the paintings, he pauses to spotlight 11 methods of paint application, keeping it simple by using black and white oil. Then he applies each technique to the full-color final paintings.
Some are familiar and time-honored techniques, such as glazing, scumbling, and oiling up. Others are unusual tips and tricks that Gurney has learned from almost 40 years of professional work, including pre-texturing, side-dragging, and palette-knife blending.
