How to paint a market scene with people. Watercolor Tutorial by Tim Wilmot of a market in Castillon, France. This video covers how to paint figures and dark shadows to create a lot of contrast.
At the start of this video, I show my source photograph for the painting. If you want to keep referring to this during the video, then copy the URL of the video into another browser Tab or Window on your device. Run the video again, but of course pause it at the start where I show the source photo. In Chrome, you can also right-click on the tab and select ‘Duplicate’.

In this demo I will be covering...
1) Choice of Subject. What makes a good watercolor subject. How to simplify the scene.
2) Materials I use such as the paper. I will also cover the paints I use and the palette, plus how I hold the different brushes for different techniques.
3) Doing the outline sketch as the first step. How to draw figures and the market stalls and the buildings. Thinking about perspective as well.
4) Doing the sky and the first wash of the background and then the foreground.
5) Shadows and details of the market stalls and figures. Getting extra tonal values into the painting.
6) Watch out for summary at the end where I cover the main points of this tutorial.
